Balangoda AnandaMaitreyaThero ( Sinhala: බලංගොඩ ආනන්ද මෛත්‍රෙය මහනාහිමි ) (August 23, 1896 – July 18, 1998) was a Sri Lankanscholarmonk and a personality of Theravada Buddhism in the twentieth century. He is regarded as one of the most respected Sri LankanBuddhistmonks, who has achieved a higher level of spiritualdevelopment through meditation. His birthname was Punchi Mahattaya aka William. Because Punchi Mahattaya's mother died when he was 14 days old, he was brought up by his father's brother and his wife. Punchi Mahattaya had his primary education at KumaraVidyalaya, Balangoda.
